Dr. Dirk Henry Lindemann passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on May 21, 2024 at home, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 1, 2024 in Lunn's Colonial Chapel with David Maclachlan officiating. There will be a visitation following the service at the funeral home.

Born July 10, 1949 in Lunden, Germany, he immigrated with his family to the United States in 1951 to Evansville, Indiana, thanks to the aid of their local German cousins.

Dr. Lindemann received a B.A. in History from the University of Evansville in 1972, and in 1974 received an MA in History at Ball State University. After completing his initial degrees, he moved to Spain in 1975 with his young family to teach English at the Foreign Language Institute, University of Barcelona. He received his Ph.D. with honors from Ball State University in 1983.

In 1983 he began his career as an Associate Professor of History, earning tenure at Midwestern State University. Dr. Lindemann was known for being an excellent teacher and was popular with his students. He prioritized mentorship and teaching. Dr. Lindemann had a gift for identifying academic talent and helping his students find their path.

While at Midwestern Dr. Lindemann continued his commitment to Pi Gamma Mu serving as faculty advisor and shepherding many students to national conferences and prestigious paper presentations. Dirk was a long-time faculty member of the MSU British Studies program, teaching in London over many summers at Queen Mary College. Dr. Lindemann taught at MSU for nearly 40 years before his retirement in the summer of 2022.

Dr. Lindemann's fascination with History also shaped his greatest values: Openness, Humanity, and Objectivity. He was inspired by countless examples of these values throughout his research in the history of Central and Eastern Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. He developed a deep admiration toward German-Jewish Intellectuals and their contributions to Western Society and Culture in the early 20th Century, the subject of his final academic opus.

Dirk prided himself on being an amateur film historian, focusing on classic American cinema and was a passionate book collector. He was fiercely proud of his approximately 20,000 books ranging in subjects from philosophy, literature and art, to history, cinema and poetry. He was a sports fan, staying true to the St. Louis Cardinals his entire life.

Dirk Lindemann will be lovingly remembered and missed by his two daughters and their husbands,  Eva Lindemann-Sánchez, and her husband, Antonio Sánchez of Brooklyn, NY; Lara Evans and her husband, Richard Evans, and grandson, Jackson Evans of Fort Worth, TX; sisters Judy Irene Lindemann, Carolyn Elke Lindemann of Evansville, Indiana, Knut Fred Lindemann his fraternal twin who preceded him in death; and his two ex-wives, Lucrecia Maclachlan of Barcelona, Spain and Sherry Lindemann of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Dirk Lindemann will be greatly missed by those who knew his name, and by those who did not  - thanks to his sparkling conversation and wit, deep empathy and his random acts of kindness. Prost!
