Gregg A. Norman, a highly respected exploration geologist, beloved father, and proud grandfather, passed away at his home on October 17, 2024 at the age of 61.

Gregg was born on December 1, 1962, in Munday, Texas. He spent his youth exploring the rugged northwest Texas terrain, instilling in him a lifelong passion for earth sciences, which led him to graduate from Midwestern State University in 1987 with a B.S. in Geology. He then entered the petroleum geology workforce, where he was very proud to call himself a scientist.

Gregg's 37-year career began with the Gunn Oil Company between 1987 and 2015, where he worked as a geotech, geologist, and eventually the Vice President of Geology.  During his time at Gunn, Gregg made numerous oilfield discoveries resulting in the production of millions of barrels of oil. In 2015, Gregg left Gunn Oil Company and co-founded Norman Browning Exploration (NBX) alongside his lifelong friend and colleague, Jimmy Browning. Together, they made a significant impact by discovering one of the largest Strawn Sand oil fields since the 1970s, a testament to Gregg's expertise and determination.

Throughout his professional life, Gregg received numerous awards and accolades for his work and served his profession by holding numerous positions in geological societies. He served as President of the North Texas Geological Society (1997-98) and President of AAPG's Southwest Section (2013-2014). His contributions to the field were further recognized with the A.I. Levorsen Award (1998), the Monroe G. Cheney Science Award (2015), and most recently, the prestigious Norman H. Foster Exploration Award (2024) from the American Association for Petroleum Geologists. He was also a frequent speaker at AAPG events, and he was an AAPG DPA Certified Petroleum Geologist and a Texas Licensed Professional Geoscientist. Despite his busy career, he made it a priority to give back to the oil & gas and geological sciences community to support the profession and colleagues he valued so deeply.

Gregg's accomplishments and accolades extended far beyond his work as well. His family and close friends knew him as a humble, loyal, and reserved man they could trust with anything. Together with Missie Harding, with whom he shared a 27-year marriage, he raised two children, Brittany and Kyler, and it was no secret that Gregg was proud of them and their accomplishments, and always ready to brag about his 4-year-old grandson Luke.  In his free time, he enjoyed a few select diversions—fast cars, good music, and time spent on his farm, which he considered his sanctuary.

Gregg is preceded in death by his mother, Joann M. Norman.

He is survived by his father, Clint J. Norman of Munday, Texas; his brother, Layne Norman of Knox City, Texas; his sister, Lynette Norman of Abilene, Texas; his son, Kyler C. Norman of Wichita Falls, Texas; his daughter, Brittany J. Norman and her husband, Kaleb Cummings of Wichita Falls, Texas, and his beloved grandson, Luke Cummings.

Gregg will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy as a geologist, father, grandfather, and friend will live on through his accomplishments and in the hearts of everyone lucky enough to have known him.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Gregg's life on Saturday, October 26 at 1 p.m. at Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home in Wichita Falls.
