Hershel Smith Walker, a lifelong resident of Wichita Falls, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2024. Born on February 7, 1932, in Burkburnett, Texas, to Marvin and Dovie Walker, Hershel led a life marked by dedication to family, faith, and his community.

He attended Burkburnett Primary, Middle, and High School, graduating in 1950. A year later in 1951, he met Patricia Lee Chambers at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, and she soon became his cherished wife and lifelong partner until her passing in 2010, after nearly 60 years of marriage. Shortly after their marriage, Hershel proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He completed his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia, where Patricia joined him.

In October 1954, Hershel Smith Walker Jr. (Smitty) was born, and the family returned to Wichita Falls, where Hershel would live out the rest of his life. After settling in, Hershel began his career at the City of Wichita Falls Water Department, rising from meter reader to Supervisor of Water Distribution over the course of 30 years. Following his retirement, he pursued his passion for automobiles by establishing Walker Motor Company, which gained a reputation for its integrity and generosity, often allowing customers to pay whatever they could afford. In addition to running the dealership, Hershel also delved into residential real estate investing. He took pleasure in renovating homes and renting them out for families to enjoy. After 20 years, he handed the dealership over to his brother, and continued to focus on his real estate ventures. He enjoyed this time of his life and was even known to mow lawns and roof houses into his 90's.

Hershel was a man of profound Christian faith, which was evident in every aspect of his life. He was actively involved in his church community, serving as a youth leader and guiding the younger generation in their spiritual growth. He also led weekly Bible studies, sharing his knowledge and passion for the scriptures with others. As a deacon at First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls, Hershel took on responsibilities that included supporting church activities and serving the congregation. His dedication extended to being a committed member of the prayer team, where he offered prayers and support to those in need. Hershel's faith was not just a personal conviction but a driving force behind his actions. His generosity and kindness were felt deeply by those around him, leaving a lasting impact on his community and demonstrating his unwavering commitment to living out his Christian values.

In 2011, he found love again and remarried Peggy, who remained by his side until his passing.

Hershel was preceded in death by his parents, Dovie and Marvin; his sister Barbara; and his wife of nearly 60 years, Patricia. He is survived by his sisters Linda Sue Davis and Vickie Rich; his brother Jimmy Dale Rich and his wife Terry; and his current wife, Peggy Walker. He is also survived by his son Hershel Smith Walker Jr. and his fiancé Megan Arrington; his grandchildren Halle and Blake Moore, Luke Walker, and William Walker; and his great-grandchildren Blake, Ryan, Brysen, and Tucker. Hershel was deeply cherished by a wide circle of friends, many of whom he considered family. His friendships were marked by loyalty and affection, and he was known for his unwavering support and genuine care for those around him. His memory will be held dear by all who knew him, and his legacy of faith, generosity, and kindness will continue to inspire and resonate with everyone whose lives he touched.

A viewing will be held at Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home on September 18 at 6:00 P.M. The funeral service will be held on September 19 at 1:00 P.M. at Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at Crestview Memorial Park.
