Major James Don (Don) Johnston was born February 25, 1936, West Columbia, Texas, To Frederick James Johnston and Ollie (Lolla) Hudgins Johnston.  He died July 7, 2022, at Presbyterian Manor, in Wichita Falls. Texas surrounded by his wife and daughters.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ollie, brothers- Bobby, Jerry, Mickey and his in laws, Jesse and Katherine Moore.

He is survived by his wife of 62 and three quarter years, Charlotte Moore Johnston, his daughters, Donna Rene Johnston, Carol Gibbs and husband Greg; his grandchildren, James Daniel Whisenhunt, Todd Whisenhunt and wife Meghan, Emily Whisenhunt, Shelby Fiscus and husband Chad; and his great grandchildren- Jaxen, Madison, Olivia, Aubree, Charlee, Mason, Cooper and Greyson, and several nieces and nephews.

He was an Eagle Scout, received a Bachelor's of Science degree with a double major in Physics and Mathematics, a Master's degree in Civil Engineering, served honorably in the US Army Corps of Engineers, worked for Vetrotex CertainTeed Corporation where he was responsible for building the "Johnston Highway", served on the Wichita Falls City Council, and ran a successful small business - Texoma Engineering.

His long history of service includes two tours in Vietnam, time served in Korea, Germany, Quantico, the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Research Center, search, rescue and recovery operations during the aftermath of the 1979 tornado, and the Waurika Lake project, in Waurika, Oklahoma.

He earned numerous medals during his military career, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal. Meritorious Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was known for his sense of humor, his kindness to others, and his tender heart. He never met a stranger, was curious about people, history and how things worked. He loved old Fords, airplanes, and telescopes.  As his grandchildren will tell you, "he was a good man and we were blessed to have him"

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 12, from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM, at Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home, 2812 Midwestern Parkway, Wichita Falls, Texas.  Services will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 13, at Texoma Cowboy Church, 919 US Hwy 281, Wichita Falls, Texas.  Burial with full military honors will be held at 2:00 PM in the Fort Sill National Cemetery, 2648 NE Jake Dunn Road, Elgin, Oklahoma under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
