Rufus (Cuco) Bernardino Sanchez Sr., 96, of Wichita Falls, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026.

The Rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23rd at Lunn’s followed by a visitation. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 24th at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.

A son of the late Sixta (Rodriguez) and Martin Sanchez, Rufus was born on November 18, 1929, in Marlin, Texas. A proud veteran, Rufus served in the United States Army and spent two years serving during the Korean War. His commitment to serving others continued throughout his life, both through his work and his faith.

Throughout the years he worked as a truck driver, roofer, and a cook, providing for his family. His faith was an important part of his life. He was a longtime volunteer at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and a member of Santo Nombre, where he found fellowship and joy in serving his church and community. For many years, he and his beloved wife, Ophelia, made cascarones together. Their time spent creating them became a cherished tradition and a beautiful reflection of their love, partnership, and generosity. After her passing he continued the tradition for several years in her memory. As the last surviving member of five siblings, Cuco carried with him the memories and stories of the generation of family who came before him. His favorite past time was watching John Wayne and western movies.

Along with his parents, Rufus was also preceded in death by two brothers, David and Issac Sanchez, four sisters, Beatrice Acosta, Martha Garcia, Mary Mesics and Nellie Esquibel, wife, Ophelia Sanchez, son, Rufus Sanchez Jr., grandchildren, Steven Sanchez, Freddy Hernandez Jr., Eric R. Ward, and Christina Hernandez.

He is survived by children, Rosie Gonzales of Wichita Falls, Texas, Cynthia Verdusco of Whittier, California, Fernando Hernandez, Nelda Ward and husband Ricky Ward, Christopher Hernandez, all of Wichita Falls, Texas; sister,19 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
