Ted Henry Buss, 82, of Wichita Falls, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 30th in the Worship Center at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bob McCartney officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.

Ted was born February 5, 1941, in Wichita Falls to Pauline and Henry Buss. Ted was All-district second baseman and co-captain of Wichita Falls Coyotes in 1959. He played baseball at MSU in 1960 before joining the Texas National Guard and spending two years on active duty with the 49 th Armored Division during the Berlin Crisis. He graduated from Midwestern State University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.

His professional life began early when he started as a newspaper carrier at age 14. His greatest memory of that time was getting to read baseball box scores every morning under a streetlight. Most of his career was spent at the Times Record News, but also included time at KAUZ-TV where he met his wife Janus and married in 1982. While at the CBS affiliate he served as Sales Manager before becoming the station General Manager. He was Assistant Athletic Director at Midwestern State University for five years before returning to his true love of journalism.

He won numerous Associated Press awards for sports, features and business writing. He became only the second writer in more than 100 years in TRN history to win a Texas Headliners Foundation Award (also known as the Charles E. Green Awards) in 1999 for feature writing. During his time as Sports Editor he wrote many stories under the header of Busstop. The position
provided numerous opportunities to interview sports figures in every arena. Some of his favorites were Arnold Palmer, Joe Louis, Bob Hays, Fran Tarkington, Roger Staubach, Bob Lilly and Australia tennis great Rod Laver.

Ted authored three books including bios on Lloyd Ruby, Graham Purcell and Robert Gunn. His passions were reading, writing, golf, gardening, fishing and love of his family and his Savior, Jesus Christ. His most comforting bible verse was John 16:33. He was a longtime member at First Baptist Church Wichita Falls.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Buss; and stepson Clay Herdman.

He is survived by his wife Janus; a son Brad and wife Mitzie of Fort Worth,TX; and a daughter Julie of Wichita Falls, TX; a stepson Dr. Chase Herdman and wife Angie of Fort Worth, TX; a sister Judy and husband Don Gehring of Georgetown, TX; sister-in-law Barbara and husband Steve Stimel of Sepastopol, CA; and five grandchildren, Brady, Ellie, Ella, Emilee and Ava.
