Dr. Theron A. Baber, age 91, died in Wichita Falls August 9, 2023.  Funeral services will be held Saturday August 12, 2023 at 10:00 am in the chapel of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home with Ken Holsberry and Larry Suttle officiating.  Private burial will follow in Rosemont Cemetery.

Dr. Baber was born January 12, 1932, in Wichita Falls to Dr. W. A. Baber and Era Tucker Baber.  He attended Wichita Falls Public Schools and graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1949.  He attended Midwestern University and was in the first graduating class of the University of Houston College of Optometry.  Theron practiced optometry in Wichita Falls for forty-nine years.

Dr. Baber married Bobbie Ruth Brubaker July 31, 1953, in Iowa Park, Texas.  She preceded him in death in 1964.  He then married Vollie Doris Spainhour December 4, 1964, she survives him.  Theron was a longtime member of the Tenth and Broad Church of Christ having served as an elder for many years.

He was a railroad enthusiast and was a member of several railway historical societies.  He has photographed and videoed trains from Europe to Japan and from Alaska and Canada to Argentina.  Many of his pictures have appeared in books, magazines and calendars over the years.  He, along with Malcolm Vordenbaum, and Dr. Forrest Monahan chartered the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum in 1980.

Dr. Baber was a member of the Optimist Club of Wichita Falls fifty-seven years and served as president 1966-67.  He was a sixty-year member of Faith Masonic Lodge 1158 AF & AM.  Dr. Baber was a member of the Northwest Texas Optometric Association, the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.  He was a Life Member of the TOA, AOA, and Optimist International.

Theron was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a brother Dr. W.F. Baber of Vernon, Texas; and two sisters, Lois Wimberley of Brandon, Mississippi, and Dr. Wilma Baber-Fletcher of Wichita Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Vollie, a son Kevin Baber and wife, Debbie of Wichita Falls and a daughter, Karen Carr and husband, Tim of Wichita Falls, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests any memorials be sent to Wichita Christian School or a charity of your choice.
