David Ray West, 76, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2015 in Wichita Falls. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Monday, December 7, 2015 at Floral Heights United Methodist Church with Rev. Merwin Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Lunnís Colonial Funeral Home.

The family will receive visitors from 3:00-4:00 PM, Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the funeral home.

David was born on May 26, 1939 to James A. and Thelma West in Wichita Falls. He was a graduate of Wichita Falls High School. He began his college career at San Angelo State Junior College, and received his bachelorís degree from Trinity University in San Antonio. He played football and baseball for Old High. After high school he received offers to play baseball from the Pittsburgh Pirates and an offer to play pro football from the New York Giants. He chose college, where he was on full athletic scholarship at both the junior college and university levels. In the fall of 1962 he joined the US Army where he served six months on active duty, followed by the Army Reserves where he spent a total of seven and a half years of service. He was honorably discharged in 1970. He then taught and coached in Texas schools for 36 years and was a graduate assistant while in college at Trinity. He started teaching and coaching at Iowa Park, then he moved to Wichita Falls, where he was at Barwise and Rider and several elementary schools. While at Rider High School, he was the varsity football offensive and defensive coordinator. From 1970 to 1975, David was head baseball coach. He retired in 1999. David married Cheryl Gruebbel on December 27, 1979 in Grandfield, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Connie Pruett and Pamela Casper.

David is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cheryl of Wichita Falls; two daughters, Kristi Salinas and husband Fred of Anson, Texas, and Kelley Baumgardner and husband David of Oak Point, Texas; an aunt, Lois Jones of Wichita Falls; nephew Robert Britton of Wichita Falls; niece Beverly Pindley and husband Jeff of Wichita Falls and other nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, including Sara, Luke and Cooper Baumgardner and Josh Williamson, Casey Williamson and his wife Caitlin, as well as one great-grandchild Ryker. Williamson.
