Mrs. Rita “Colleen” Roberts, 87, passed away from this life on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. Funeral service will be Monday, January 13th at 10:00 a.m. at Edgemere Church of Christ with Joe Williams and Dr. Stephen Johnson officiating. Private family burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery in Wichita Falls.
Colleen was born on January 21, 1932 in Quanah, Texas to Bessie Inez Holmes and Otto Thomas “Tater” Holmes. She married Ross O’Neal Roberts on his birthday in 1955 and they were married 61 years before his death in 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joy Holmes.
Colleen highly valued education. She received her Master’s degree in Education from Midwestern State University after receiving her undergraduate degree in Education from the University of North Texas. Colleen taught in the Wichita Falls and Iowa Park public school districts for 32 years ending her successful career as a junior high guidance counselor.
Mrs. Roberts was a charter member of the Edgemere Church of Christ and taught children’s Bible classes there for many years. She also enjoyed her tenure as a member of the 23 Study Club in Iowa Park. Colleen loved music and instilled that love for music in her children at a very early age with piano lessons, and all were active in band and/or choir. She was very musically gifted playing piano by ear and entertained many civic groups in her younger days as an awesome accordionist. Her children and grandchildren loved it when she broke out her accordion!
Colleen is survived by her three children: Kelly Roberts; Risa Hillard and husband Keith; and Kent Roberts and wife Lori.
She is also survived by 7 grandchildren she adored: Jacy DeArmond and husband Cody; Libbie Brown and husband Eric; Dylan Hillard; Madison Twilligear and husband Trey; Molly, Ben, and Katy Roberts; three very special great-grandchildren Arden DeArmond, Sadie DeArmond, and Samuel Brown; nephews Bran and Brec Roberts, niece Jeanne Roberts and special friend Diana Vowell.
Memorial contributions can be made to Edgemere Church of Christ Mission Fund, Hospice of Wichita Falls, or The House of Hope. Colleen deeply loved her family, her friends, and her church family. We take great comfort in knowing she is in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father until we are united together again.
