Grethe was born Margrethe Djernis Jensen on January 23, 1926 in Aalborg, Denmark to parents Sofie and Marius Jensen. Grethe had one sister, Anna Elise.

Grethe grew up in Denmark during the German occupation of WWII. She joined her fellow Danes in playing occasional pranks on the German soldiers. After the war, Grethe came to San Antonio, TX with her Uncle Chris and his family. There she worked at the family florist shop with her cousin Margaret and Margaretʼs new husband. It was there that Grethe met her own husband, Jim Oatman, her cousinʼs brother-in-law.

Grethe and Jim were married January 22, 1951 in New York City. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. There they lived in the same apartment building as Jimʼs other brother and his wife, Wayland and Carolyn Oatman. The two couples were close, even having their first sons born on the same day in the same hospital. Grethe and Jim had 4 children; Mark Oatman, Gary Oatman, Clay Oatman and Lisa Oatman Prater.

Grethe focused on raising her children by volunteering in their schools, serving as a Cub Scout Leader, Campfire Girl Leader and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Senior-Junior Forum, the Morning Circle Bible Study and other organizations. Later in life Grethe enjoyed working at Kruegerʼs Jewelry Store, specializing in Bridal Registry. She also thoroughly enjoyed her service as a Hospice of Wichita Falls volunteer, where she served many countless hours.

Grethe faithfully attended Trinity Lutheran Church where she had many sweet friends. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School when her children were young, helping with potluck suppers, pancake breakfasts and progressive dinners for the church youth.

Gretheʼs hobbies included painting, ceramics, playing bridge, sewing, reading and gardening. She was known for her charming Danish accent, her chocolate sheet cake and her love for her family.

Grethe is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim Oatman, son Mark and her sister. Grethe is survived by Gary Oatman and wife Brenda of Wichita Falls, Clay Oatman of Gainesville, Lisa Oatman Prater and husband Terry of Houston, 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all those who have been of such great support to Grethe over the past few years, including close friends and loving nurses and assistants at Presbyterian Manor.
