Bill J. Rowland, 89, of Wichita Falls died Thursday, November 22, 2018, after a gallant battle against Alzheimerís at the House of Hope.
Services will be held Tuesday, November 27th at 1:00 pm at First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls. Interment will follow the service at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will be at Lunnís funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 pm for visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunnís Colonial Funeral Home.
Bill Rowland was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on October 24, 1929, to Ellen Patton Rowland and Joe Rowland. A Wichitan for the majority of his lifetime, Bill began his career in real estate shortly after attending Texas Tech University. He soon expanded into the building industry and later combined his passions for real estate and construction into his own business. Bill successfully sold real estate for many years and started Bill Rowland Real Estate in 1967, Rowland and Dudley in 1968, and in 1983 formed Rowland and Donnell Real Estate with his son Bobby and dear friend Blanche Donnell. He led it until his retirement.
In 1951, Bill married Marianne Drummond, and together they had three children, Bobby, Suzanne and Sherri. Marianne and Bill enjoyed forty-nine wonderful years together until Marianne passed away in 1999. In 2000, Bill married his childhood friend Mary Lou Jenkins Naron, and they remained close until his passing.
Billís peers in the real estate community of Wichita Falls recognized his distinguished career by awarding him Realtor of the Year, Builder of the Year, and the Real Estate Silver Service Award. He was recognized by his peers when he was inducted into the North Texas Home Builderís Housing Hall of Honor. He played active roles in the North Texas Home Builders Association, the National Association of Home Builders, Texas and National Association of Realtors and the Board of Realtors. Additionally, he served on the Board of American National Bank & Trust for 24 years as a dedicated director.
In addition to being highly respected as a businessman, Bill Rowland was equally recognized as a giver of his time and expertise by serving numerous community organizations. Over the years he was active with the Boys and Girls Club and the Optimist Club. He served on the board for the Salvation Army, the Wichita County Water Irrigation District No. 2 and the Wichita Falls Centennial Committee. In addition, Bill served the Texas National Guard as a Sergeant First Class, Rifle Instructor and Marksman for 17 years.
Bill was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls. His service to the church included positions on the Official Board, Building Committee Chairman, Budget Committee Chairman, Finance Committee Chairman, as well as an active Sunday School teacher for many years.
Bill was preceded by his parents and his wife Marianne Rowland. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou Rowland, his son Bobby and his wife Debbie Rowland of Iowa Park, his daughter Suzanne and her husband Scott Cannaday of Charlotte, NC, his daughter Sherri and her husband Jeffrey Schultz of Wichita Falls and his Korean foreign exchange daughter Hyo Jung and her husband Je Yoon of Malvern, PA. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Bobby Rowland, James Rowland, Kristy Cannaday Ward, Ashley Cannaday Trotter, Kyle Cannaday, Parker Schultz, and Libby Schultz as well as ten great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by stepsonís Michael and his wife Cindy Naron, Danny and his wife Cheryl Naron, stepdaughters Sherry McAnally, Ann Sanders, Lorena and her husband Matt Brady, and Dawn and her husband Dennis Chalaire as well as 18 step-grandchildren and 32 step-great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his sister Mildred Bryd of Burleson, TX.
